Trek El Altar (VTE-03)2019-06-30T22:56:45+02:00

Day 1: La Candelaria (Hacienda Releche)/Valle de Collanes

3.070m-3.830m. / 10 km

We will be transported from Quito to the little charming Andean town ”La Candelaria”, where the trek starts at the beautiful Hacienda Releche at 3.070 meters above sea-level. We will trek 10 km, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but due to the altitude and the difficult, muddy trail it will take about 7-8 hours to reach Valle de Collanes, where we will either sleep in tents or in a mountain-refuge. (depends on what the group chooses)

Included meals: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner

Day 2 Valle de Collanes/Laguna Amarilla

3.830m.-4.245m. / 3 km

Early in the morning we will start to trek the last few kilometres towards La Laguna Amarilla at the bottom of El Altar. We will cross the grass field after which the terrain starts to get quite steep. If the clouds allow it, we will have stunning views of the snow-capped mountain tops of El Altar on the way. The final part of the ascension you will have to scramble (walking up steep terrain involving the use of one’s hands) and this part is a bit exposed, so be careful where you put your hands and feet! It is for a short part only though and it is not difficult. Finally, you will arrive to an absolutely stunning viewpoint of El Altar and La Laguna Amarilla at 4.245 meters above sea-level. Now you’ll have the rest of the day free to enjoy the magnificent landscape. The roundtrip from the campsite and back is around 4 hours.

Included meals: Breakfast | Lunch | Dinner
