Climb Chimborazo & Antisana

On this 14-day mountaineering expedition we will explore the unique Ecuadorian highland. Experience the capital of Quito and visit the charming highland town Otavalo as a part of our high altitude acclimatization process before the real mountain-adventure begins. We will climb the majestic Chimborazo Volcano, which is the highest point in the world – even higher than Mount Everest! – if you measure from the centre of the earth, and the challenging Antisana Volcano in the Ecuadorian Andes with our competent mountain-guides.

Day 1 Quito
Arrival in Quito in 2.850 meters of altitude. Airport pick up and transfer to hotel.
Day 2 Quito
City Tour: Early in the morning, the tour will depart towards downtown Quito, or Centro Histórico, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978. We will start with a panoramic view of Alameda Park and the Basilica, followed by a walk down the street of the Seven Crosses. The trip will continue with a walking tour, starting at Independence Square. From here, we will visit the presidential palace, the main cathedral, the gold-plated La Compañía Church, San Francisco Church and San Francisco Plaza. From here we will take a bus to El Teleferico, where we will go by cable cars to Cruz Loma at 4000 meters. From here you will have a beautiful view of the city. In the afternoon we will visit “La Mitad del Mundo” (Middle of the World) in Spanish. then we will visit the Intiñan Museum where you can experience the wonders of being present at latitude 0°0’0″.

Day 3 Quito/Otavalo
Transport to Otavalo town. Visit Cuicocha Lake and enjoy a nice hike (4 hours) around the lake. Hotel in Otavalo

Day 4 Otavalo/Climb Imbabura Volcano (4.630 m.)
In the morning we make an early departure from Otavalo towards the city of Ibarra continuing to the foothills of the Imbabura Volcano. The trek/climb will take approximately 5-6 hours. If the weather permits we will enjoy great views of the Northern Ecuadorian Andes. Return to Otavalo in the afternoon.

Day 5 Otavalo/Cayambe Volcano Refuge
In the morning we drive towards the upper hills of the Cayambe volcano. A 1-hour hike will take us up to the hut located at 4800m. Stay overnight in the refuge.

Day 6 Cayambe Glacier-School
We set out for the glaciers to practice some climbing techniques. We will spend the night in the refuge.

Day 7 Climb Cayambe Volcano (5.790 m.)/Quito
At midnight we wake up to prepare ourselves for the climb to the summit of Cayambe Volcano. The adventure will last for about 6-7 hours of steady climbing in snowfields. Return to the refuge in the afternoon and drive back to Quito.

Day 8 Quito/Antisana Campsite
Our Private transport takes us from Quito to Antisana Protected area located in the southeast of Quito. After registration we drive until the campsite at 4600m of altitude, where we will spend the night in tents.

Day 9 Antisana Volcano Summit (5.704 m.)/Baños
We will start our attempt for the summit at 1 am in order to reach the top before the snow gets too soft from the sunlight. After reaching the summit, we will be transported to the city Baños, which is located at 1.800 meters above sea level and is the perfect place to recover and relax before the next big challenge.

Day 10 Baños
Today we will have a relaxing day in Baños. Visit the famous waterfall route, which goes through 2 protected areas along the Pastaza River and explore the popular ”El Pailon del Diablo” waterfalls.. The day is also saved as a reserve day in case of bad weather or other circumstances on the Antisana Volcano.

Day 11 Baños/Chimborazo ”Whymper Refuge”
After a relaxed morning we will drive towards the southwestern slopes of the impressive Mount Chimborazo, the largest and highest mountain of Ecuador. Chimborazo is the highest point on earth, as Earth is widest at its equator. Our car will take us to the Carrel hut at 4800m from where a 1-hour hike will take us to the famours Whimper Hut at 5000m.

Day 12 Chimborazo Volcano Summit (6.268 m.)/Quito
We start our attempt towards the summit at midnight following the ridge on the left side of the Thielmann glacier. We expect to arrive at the top after 8-9 hours of steady climbing. Return to the refuge in the afternoon where our vehicle will take us back to Quito.

Day 13 Quito
Free day in Quito and reserve day in case the first Chimborazo attempt wasn’t successful

This trip can be run as a group trip of maximum 10 people, or it can be an individual trip.
There will be a local English-speaking guide with you the whole way except from the climbs, where there will be one English-speaking, certified mountain guide per 2 clients. Your mountain guides are experts in the area and have climbed the specific mountains many times.
Accommodation:
In Quito, Otavalo and Baños you will be accommodated in double rooms in hotels with around 4 stars. In the mountain refuges you sleep in shared rooms with bunkbeds and with sleeping bags.
